Who am I?

June was strawberry harvesting month

My name is Ali and I'm a current Stockbridge student majoring in Sustainable Food and Farming at Umass Amherst. This past January, I applied and was interviewed for a summer internship at Just Roots farm in Greenfield Ma. Having a hands on experience in farming is something I have yearned for since the day I sat in on my first agricultural class. When I was selected for this opportunity, I was filled with excitement and gratitude. I've learned so much these past months, so it is my pleasure to share with you some of the experiences that I value most.

Just Roots Farm.

The 61 acre plot on which Just Roots in located is operated by a team of farm directors, managers, workers, and interns. The land consists of two crop fields, an animal pasture, and surrounding woodland. 8 acres of the land is used to grow 50 different types of fruit, vegetables, and herbs. This summer is the first season Just Roots has incorporated animals into their system. The farm now raises red ranger chickens and pigs for meat production.

What we market.

Just Root's mission is to "Increase access to healthy, local food by connecting people, land, resources and know-how". We distribute our products to local farmers markets, one in Greenfield and the other in Turner's Falls Ma. The farm is also a part of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). This program connects local farmers so that they can distribute weekly farm shares to customers. In addition to the normal sized family share, we have a smaller share that we distribute to local seniors citizens. Just Roots also supplies in bulk to wholesale buyers.
